Established in 2019 with the vision to restore and propagate the natural flora and fauna of agricultural land in Najafgarh, New Delhi; Nehar Sahibi is an urban farming and community space that’s primed to encourage a sustainable, low-carbon, and nature-first lifestyle. We achieve this not just by cultivating seasonal crops on the land, but also by implementing regenerative techniques, permaculture design, and community involvement.
We have a soft corner for this vast space
Sahibi Nadi originates from Sikar, Rajasthan, and enters Delhi to join the Yamuna via the Najafgarh drain. What used to be a glistening stream flowing into, and adding to Yamuna’s flow, is now reduced to a Nala with encroachments, illicit waste disposal practices, and rapid urbanization. As much as it is the story of most rivers in India, we believe that our baby steps in using and encouraging regenerative practices can help rehabilitate this ecologically sensitive landscape. By naming ourselves after this forgotten stream, we strive to keep the pride, the majesty, and the beauty of Sahibi alive.
MARKET GARDENING
Let’s face it. Most of the veggies we get from our local vendors are grown with conventional, chemical-heavy methods and are transported from afar. At Neher Sahibi’s 3-acre vast Market Garden, we cultivate seasonal organic vegetables for local consumption, bearing in mind the weather patterns, sustainably available water, and of course, our own mindfulness.
NATURAL FARMING
Every life form, from micro-organisms that nourish our soil to the bovines that nourish the native families on our farm, has an equal right to thrive. It’s no argument that life and nature flourish best if let be. Our practices at Nehar Sahibi, be it growing food, building structures, or even preparing food, ensure the least resistance to the flow of nature and the web of life it supports. We do that with simple practices like giving parts of the crops back to the Earth, eating raw meals at the farm, basking in the sun’s energies, and practicing mindfulness, every step of the way.
Immersed in the culture of permaculture
In collaboration with non-profits, namely, Ecovita Foundation and Edible Routes Foundation; Nehar Sahibi is shaping into a space that offers abundance, holistic health, relationships, and endless learning. approx 10-acre space is something of a playground for experimenting with permaculture design principles. Three simple ethics guide this effort: caring for the environment, caring for ourselves and other people, and sharing our productive surpluses rather than hoarding them. We intend to use these principles to manifest a life full of compassion, synergy, and flow.
